Tim Beck is the fourth football coach in CCU history. Here’s who preceded him on the field

Tim Beck will become the fourth head football coach in Coastal Carolina University, assuming the reins of a program that’s emerged as one of America’s most competitive Group of Five squads.

Here’s a look at who else has roamed the sidelines at Brooks Stadium.

Coastal’s first coach is now a Midlands athletic director

Dave Bennett, 61, is a Greer native who played at Presbyterian College from 1981 through 1984. After stops at Clemson, Goose Creek High School and Newberry College, Bennett was on the coaching staff at Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C. from 1990 through 2001, including as head coach from 1995 to 2001.

Bennett came to Conway in 2003 as its inaugural coach, staying through 2011 and racking up a 63-39 record.

CCU beat Newberry 21-14 in the program’s first ever game.

Since his departure from the college ranks Bennett has served as athletic director at some of South Carolina’s largest high schools including Socastee and River Bluff. He’s been athletic director at Lexington School District 1 since 2017.

Joe Moglia is a businessman turned coach

Moglia, 73, succeeded Bennett in 2012, coming from the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League.

He was defensive coordinator at Dartmouth from 1981 through 1983 then entered the business world, spending 17 years at Merrill Lynch and TD Ameritrade.

In 2009, Moglia got back into the coaching world with a stint on Bo Pelini’s staff in Nebraska. He came to Coastal in 2012, racking up a 56-22 record over his four-year tenure. Moglia also coached the team to a 5-7 record in 2018.

Moglia’s contract ran through 2021 but he stepped down in January 2019.

In 2021, Moglia made a sizable but unspecified financial donation to the school allowing it to start design work on an indoor practice site, expanded football facilities and a proposed south endzone project.

Moglia remains active in CCU sports as chairman of its athletics department and executive director of football operations.

Jamey Chadwell emerged as one of America’s hottest coaching prospects

Chadwell, 45, worked as Moglia’s offensive coordinator in 2018 before taking over as head coach the next year. His three-year stint at Coastal ended with a 39-22 record. Chadwell was hired on Dec. 4 as Liberty’s next head coach.

Chadwell’s resume includes a Sun Belt championship in 2020, when he was also named the AP College Football Coach of the Year — just the third coach outside of a power conference to win.

Jamey Chadwell led the Coastal football team to a 39-22 record over five seasons. The Chanticleers have been ranked in The Associated Press Top 25 in each of the last three seasons — peaking at No. 9 during the 2020 campaign.

Chadwell’s Coastal career started in 2017 as its interim head coach. From 2013 through 2016, he was head coach of Charleston Southern, with stops prior to that at Delta State, North Greenville and East Tennessee State.

Overall, Chadwell has a career 99-57 coaching record including a Division II national title with North Greenville and three bowl wins.
