TikTokers say Disney’s text-to-speech feature censored words like ‘gay’ and ‘lesbian’

Disney’s text-to-voice feature on TikTok reportedly silenced words like “gay,” “lesbian,” and “queer’ — and LGBTQ TikTokers are taking note.

Last week, the entertainment giant unveiled a partnership with TikTok that would allow users of the popular video app to incorporate the voices of popular characters of the Disney family into their short, sweet, and hopefully viral, videos.

Using TikTok’s text-to-speech feature, TikTokers can sound like “Star Wars” favorites Chewbacca and C-3PO; Lilo, from “Lilo & Stitch,” and Rocket the Racoon, from “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

But according to The Verge, Rocket temporarily refused to read a few common LGBTQ terms.

Whenever a user attempted to use the app to say one such word, an error message would say that text-to-speech wasn’t supported for that language.

TikTok user KaraBiner recorded a video in which the app appears to skip the right spelling of the words “gay” and “queer” and shared the incident with her more than 180,000 followers.

“Did you guys know that Disney won’t allow the voice to say [the word gay] but you can say ‘Gayy’ and ‘Gayy’ and ‘Guay?’” the voice of Rocket the Racoon can be heard saying — while skipping the correct spelling of “gay.”

“You also can’t say [queer], but you can say ‘Qweer,’” Rocket’s voice added.

The word “lesbian” is illegal too, the TikToker noted. “However you can say Disney is being homophobic and promotes homophobia on the app,” she added, while her text is being read out loud by the Marvel raccoon.

The post, shared on Monday, was liked nearly 190,000 in one day.

The issue seems to have been fixed as of Monday afternoon, but TikTok hasn’t commented on why it was happening in the first place.
