Tiffany Haddish Used to Ask Her Therapist to 'Come with Me on Dates' to Vet Suitors

Haddish did not always listen to the therapist's advice. "I would date them anyway. And then I was like 'Oh dang, the therapist was right,' " she said

Tiffany Haddish used to have a foolproof dating strategy.

The comedian, 44, appeared on the May 9 episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers, where she spoke to her various experiences with therapists as a young woman. After Haddish told host Seth Meyers that she used to test out her standup comedy routines during therapy sessions, the Girls Trip star said she eventually met a therapist who agreed to accompany her on dates.

"I started asking them to come with me on dates, come with me to different things," she said, before clarifying, "No, like going out to dinner dates — like I'm going on a date."

"I would ask the therapist, could you meet me here? I just want you to meet this person and see if they're somebody I should be dating," she added.

Haddish said she would introduce her date to her therapist and offer both parties drinks while they chatted. She also told Meyers she and her therapist would reconvene the next day and her therapist would confide in her whether she thought the person could prove a quality match.

Despite taking the time to hear her therapist out, Haddish said she often did not listen to the their opinions when deciding if she should date the person.

"No, I had to learn, because the therapist was telling me don't date that person, and I'd be like 'Oh, okay,' and then I would date them anyway. And then I was like 'Oh dang, the therapist was right,' " she said.

Haddish, who has been promoting her new book I Curse You with Joy, was previously married to ex-husband William Stewart, whom she split from in 2013. She notably dated actor and rapper Common from August 2020 to November 2021, but recently, Haddish has said she is practicing celibacy.

"They went together," she told PEOPLE in April of cutting out both sex and alcohol after a DUI arrest back in November, her second. "With alcohol [my mind] would just be like ‘You’re horny, let's just do it.’ "

She expanded on her celibacy during a recent appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, saying, "It feels easy. I don't know, I've been working out a lot. So I feel like I get my sexual, like frustrations out in the workout."
