BOYS BASKETBALL

Xavier 54, West De Pere 47

APPLETON - The Hawks survived a second-half rally from the Phantoms to gut out a key Bay Conference victory.

Xavier led 28-17 to start the second half but saw its 11-point lead shrink to 37-36 on a 3-point basket from Riley Kraft.

The Hawks then put together a 10-3 run to retake command and hang on for the win.

Xavier (15-1 overall, 9-0 Bay) is in the driver's seat over the second-place Phantoms (14-4, 8-2) in the battle for the league crown.

“I really feel like it was a gritty win,” Xavier coach Matt Klarner said. “Maybe our grittiest win of the season. ...We didn’t shoot the ball particularly well. I don’t think our finishing numbers around the rim were outstanding and our free throw numbers were not outstanding. But the guys just battled defensively. We weren’t going to give up easy shots, no easy plays for West De Pere. That’s a really good West De Pere team.”

Tyler Brightman had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Xavier, with Hayden Quimby adding 11 points.

Klarner pointed to Luke Krull’s defense on Bryce Borowicz in the first half as one of the keys to the win. Borowicz didn’t score in the first half but led West De Pere with 13 points. Patrick Greisen scored 12 points and Riley Kraft added 10 for the Phantoms.

“Luke Krull takes the toughest assignment every night,” Klarner said. “That’s just what he does. We know who the No. 1 guy and we know the assigment he’s going to have and he’s going to be ready to go. Tonight, just another night for him going out there and doing his thing. Couldn’t have been more proud of him with the leadership he brings. He battled for 36 minutes.”
