Thursday's Fantastic Five MetroWest and Milford high school athletes made a splash

Championship season is arriving. The Midland-Wachusett league hosted its swimming and diving championships, and many of those athletes made a splash in our Fantastic Five. League titles are also being secured in other sports.

The playoff will be here before we know it.

Without further ado, here's the MetroWest and Milford area Fantastic Five high school athletes from Thursday, February 1:

MINA CHUNG, Algonquin girls swimming & diving

The sophomore won the 200-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly at the Midland Wachusett swimming and diving championships Thursday. She finished the IM in 2 minutes, 17.39 seconds and the butterfly in 1:04.92. Chung also contributed to the Titans' 400 freestyle relay (fifth) and 200 medley relay (seventh). Algonquin was seventh as a team.

ARYAMAN JAIN, Westborough boys swimming & diving

The junior set two meet records at the Mid-Wach swimming and diving championships Thursday, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 21.6 seconds. The previous record was 22.09 by Nashoba's Minh-Huy Le in 2020. He also clocked the fastest 10 freestyle in league history at 47.86 seconds. That barely edged Algonquin's Ray Cerro, who finished in 48.87 in 2019. Jain also swam on Westborough's third-place 200 medley relay team and third-place 200 freestyle relay squad. The Rangers were third as a team with 233 points. Algonquin took the team title with 380 points led by Branden Yan's victory in the 200 IM (2:13.95). The Titans also won the 200 freestyle relay. Erion Zaimi, Maxwell Qi, Eric Tam and Simon Landen out touched Bromfield in 1:38.84, winning by .03 seconds.

JAZMIN HANCOCK, Tri-County girls basketball

She scored 13 points Thursday and led the Cougars to a narrow 29-27 win over Southeastern on Thursday. Ava Gill pulled down 10 rebounds, and Neila Schweitzer scored seven points for Tri-County (8-6, 2-4 Mayflower).

CAITLYN REITSMA, Westborough girls swimming & diving

The senior sprinted to victories in the 50 freestyle (25.79 seconds) and 100 free (56.66 seconds). She also swam on the Rangers' second-place 200 medley relay (2:00.68) with Sophie Robinson, Savannah Spring and Isabelle Dwane. Westborough was also second in the 200 free relay with Robinson, Dwane, Kriti Khambadkone and Reitsma (1:49.36). The Rangers placed second as a team with 279 points behind Shrewsbury (326).

VIRGINIA WEEKS, Lincoln-Sudbury girls alpine skiing

The freshman took third in Thursday's race to help the Warriors clinch the regular season Mass Bay West championship with a perfect 7-0 record. L-S defeated Winchester, 54-37, and Lunenburg, 58-33. Kenzie Gabel followed her in fourth, Sophie Ward was fifth and Kara LaPoine took seventh. It's the first time in the last 15 years four girls from the same team finished in the top seven in the league standings.

UXBRIDGE 52, Nipmuc 39: Logan DeMarzo led the Warriors (10-4) with 13 points. Nipmuc's James McKinney scored 10 points Thursday.

ACTON-BOXBOROUGH 4, Wayland/Weston 2: Tilly Myles saved 36 shots Thursday, while CoCo Curran scored both goals. Niall Calahane, Molly Ross, Mackenzie Regan and Kate Lamb added an assist each for Wayland/Weston (5-8, 3-6 MVC/DCL Small).

Boys alpine skiing

LINCOLN-SUDBURY 49, Lunenberg 37; WINCHESTER 48, L-S 38: Nick Boden took sixth for the Warriors on Thursday. L-S finished second in the final league standings at 6-1.
