Three people shot in Six Flags Great America parking lot in Gurnee, Illinois

Three people were shot around closing time Sunday in a Six Flags Great America parking lot in Gurnee, Ill., authorities said.

Several ambulances rushed to the scene as video posted on social media showed people hunkered down and trying to hide, CBS News reported.

The shots came from a single vehicle that peeled off, a spokeswoman for the park told the Chicago Tribune. Two victims were taken to a hospital, and the third declined treatment, the Tribune said. Police did not release details such as age or gender.

Visitors to the park and staff were evacuated by the Gurnee Police Department and authorities were investigating Sunday night, the Tribune said.

The shooting happened at about 7:50 p.m. outside the 300-acre theme park, which boasts 17 roller coasters and a water park.

“Park security personnel and officers from the on-site Gurnee Police Department Substation responded immediately,” park spokesperson Rachel Kendziora told CNN, adding that the scene was being handled by Gurnee police and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

There is “no indication it’s an active shooter at this time,” Lake County Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli told CNN.

People at the park ran as gunshots rang out, though at least some did not recognize them at first.

“I thought there were fireworks right away,” witness Charlie Donda told CBS News. “Then we saw hundreds of people running. It was pretty scary, but we are safe.”

Gurnee, about an hour north of Chicago by car, is in Lake County, the same jurisdiction as the massacre at the Highland Park July 4 parade.
