Blanchard 55, Sallisaw 28

Three takeaways from Class 4A No. 3 Blanchard’s 55-28 playoff quarterfinal rout of No. 8 Sallisaw

Read option: The Blanchard defense allowed its second-highest point total of the season (28 points), but managed to collect five turnovers despite Sallisaw losing just one of its four fumbles. The Lions (11-1) intercepted four passes, highlighted by a pair of thefts from junior defensive back Brayson Carter.

Key moment: After a first half in which it turned the ball over three times, allowed a first down on a fake punt and committed a host of penalties, Blanchard held a slim halftime advantage at 21-14. Facing second down and 22 yards to go from his own 41-yard line, Blanchard senior quarterback Carson Cooksey broke free for a 58-yard run, the longest of his prep career. The scamper gave the Lions the ball at Sallisaw’s 1-yard line, and one play later the first of two short scoring runs in the third quarter by tailback Vaughn McIntyre provided Blanchard with a two-touchdown cushion at 28-14. The Lions found the end zone three more times in the 27-point third frame en route to a 48-21 lead.

Player of the game: Cooksey. The senior overcame two first-half turnovers and finished the contest with 282 passing yards, 80 rushing and three total touchdowns. He currently holds scholarship offers from Central Oklahoma, Central Missouri and Missouri Southern State.

Del City's Braelon Adamah, left, celebrates with LaDainian Fields (9), middle, after Fields made a touchdown reception during a high school football game between Guthrie and Del City in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A playoffs in Del City, Okla., Friday, Nov. 17, 2023.

Three key takeaways from second-ranked Del City’s 47-14 home win over third-ranked Guthrie in the second round of the Class 5A football playoffs on Friday night.

Player of the game: Braelon Adamah. The senior running back had one of the best games of his high school career on Friday night — scoring three times while carrying the ball seven times for 52 yards and two touchdowns. A punt return gave him a third touchdown on the night, and his first-half efforts gave the Eagles a boost in the win.

Key moment: After a pivotal Guthrie drive ended in a three-and-out, Braelon Adamah waited near the Bluejays’ end zone for a punt, which he then took 90 yards to the opposite end zone for a touchdown. This was Adamah's third touchdown of the day, as the score killed Guthrie's momentum heading into halftime.

Read option: Guthrie’s loss marks the first time all season that the Bluejays defense allowed more than 24 points. Other than their games against Carl Albert and Lawton MacArthur a week ago, the Bluejays had not allowed a touchdown to an opponent all year. Running back Jaylen Harper, who had rushed for over 100 yards and a touchdown in each game this season, only rushed for 59 yards on 16 carries.

Carl Albert 52, Collinsville 14

Three takeaways from Class 5A top-ranked Carl Albert’s 52-14 state quarterfinal home win over No. 7 Collinsville on Friday night:

Player of the game: Kevin Sperry Jr. The junior quarterback propelled Carl Albert to a flying start with his dual-threat skills. He completed eight of nine pass attempts for 181 yards and two touchdowns before heading to the bench partway through the second half because of the lopsided score. Sperry, an OU commit, also rushed for 60 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 11 carries.

Top moment: In the second quarter, Cooper Brakhage blocked a punt to set Carl Albert up on Collinsville’s 6-yard line. Sperry capitalized, scampering into the end zone on the first snap of the ensuing drive. The Titans extended their lead to 28-0, deflating the Cardinals’ hopes of a comeback.

Read option: Mike Dunn said the Titans have a goal of at least two takeaways in each game, and they finished with three. Trystan Haynes and Bradyn Webb each added a pick six, and Webb’s 88-yard interception return was the Titans’ longest touchdown. OU commit Trynae Washington also grabbed an interception that led to a 30-yard field goal.

Choctaw’s Cash Williams (15) runs the ball during a high school football game between Sand Springs and Choctaw, in Choctaw, Okla., on Friday, Nov. 17, 2023.

Three takeaways from Class 6A-II third-ranked Choctaw’s 45-15 quarterfinal win against Sand Springs.

Top player: Cash Williams. The Choctaw junior quarterback had a great game while leading the Yellowjackets’ offense. A Tennessee baseball commit, Williams was solid through the air and showcased his rushing ability, scoring on runs of 47 and 36 yards.

Top moment: Choctaw junior receiver Hayden Mounce took a reverse and scored on a 51-yard touchdown with 5:51 left in the second quarter. Mounce got into the secondary of Sand Springs’ defense before shedding a tackle, juking a defender and breaking away. The Yellowjackets took a 15-0 lead after the touchdown and had a 22-0 advantage at halftime.

Championship rematch up next: With the win, Choctaw advanced to the semifinals and will face Stillwater. Choctaw lost to Stillwater 26-21 in last year’s title game. Stillwater is on a nine-game winning streak and beat Putnam City 56-7 on Friday.
