Here are three numbers that helped determine the result of the Kansas City Chiefs’ 27-17 win vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday afternoon at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

23.2

This was a Chiefs win that got there like many do: because Patrick Mahomes was KC’s quarterback.

Mahomes completed 26 of 35 yards for 331 yards with four touchdowns and an interception, and a deeper dive into the numbers only made his play look stronger.

According to the advanced box score at rbsdm.com, Mahomes added 23.2 expected points with his play against Jacksonville. For context, in the NFL’s first nine weeks, only two QB performances topped that mark in a game according to Sports Info Solutions: Mahomes in Week 7 vs. the San Francisco 49ers (24.4), and Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow (23.3) the same week against Atlanta.

It might get overlooked because the score widened in the second half, but when the game was in doubt early, the Chiefs received some good fortune they hadn’t had all season: They had a kick missed against them.

And not just one, but two. Jacksonville kicker Riley Patterson missed a 51-yard try in the second quarter, then just before the half ended, pushed another 41-yard attempt wide left.

Before the game began, opponents had made 12 of 12 field goal tries against the Chiefs and 19 of 19 extra points.

Third-down conversion might keep a permanent spot on these postgame numbers if the Chiefs keep performing like this.

KC was again outstanding on the all-important down, converting 7 of 10 for 70%. To compare, Jacksonville went 4-for-14 on its third downs (29%), creating a discrepancy that helped swing the game’s outcome.

As a bonus, KC also went 1-for-1 on fourth down, converting late in the fourth quarter on fourth-and-2 to solidify the two-score win.
