Three juveniles escape detention center in Hinds County ... for the second time

The search is underway Monday for three teenagers who escaped from the Henley-Young-Patton Juvenile Justice Center in Hinds County.

This is the second time the same teens broke out of the detention center in the last six months.

According to Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones, 14 juveniles attempted to overpower a guard and got out of their cells Sunday night. During this incident, three teens escaped and another three were injured.

Sheriff Jones said the teens who escaped were 17-year-old Tayshon Holmes, 16-year-old Robert Smith and 15-year-old Jashon Jones. The Clarion Ledger typically does not publish names for minors but because law enforcement agencies named the minors and consider them potentially dangerous, they are being named as a public service.

According to Sheriff Jones, the teenagers stole a blue 2007 Jeep Liberty with the license plate CFB 0901 from the parking lot. The car is believed to contain a gun. This stolen car was found unoccupied in the 1900 block of Wilson St.

It is unknown at this time if the gun was found inside the recovered car.

The three additional detainees that were injured were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"The Hinds County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) is only a responding and investigating agency for the Henley-Young-Patton Youth Detention Center," Jones said in a social media post. "We are not responsible for the day-to-day operations or staff at the facility. The County Administrator’s Office is the governing body of the facility and staff."

In June 2023, Holmes, Jones and Smith escaped from the same detention center. The escape occurred around midnight following a scuffle at the center.

During this incident, two detainees and a guard were injured. No injuries were life-threatening.
