Three Connecticut teens arrested for fight resulting in stabbing death of high school lacrosse player
Three Connecticut teens have been arrested in connection with a house party brawl that culminated in the stabbing death of high school lacrosse player James McGrath.
The suspects, two 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old, surrendered to authorities on Thursday, according to a press release from the Shelton Police Department.
One of the 17-year-old suspects was charged with second-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace, police said. He was released on $25,000 bond.
The other two other teens are facing counts of third-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace. They too have since been released.
James McGrath was killed on May 14.
The charges stem from an altercation that unfolded outside a home on Lazy Brook Road the night of May 14.
“During the incident a 16-year-old male victim, who was invited to the party on Lazy Brook Road, was assaulted by the three juveniles,” police said. “One juvenile assaulted the victim with a helmet.”
Police said the fight is linked to a second altercation the unfolded inside another home on Laurel Glen Drive the same night. Three teens were stabbed, including McGrath, a 17-year-old from Shelton who played lacrosse at the nearby Fairfield College Preparatory School.
The latter incident remains under investigation.
Sixteen-year-old Raul Valle was arrested back in May in connection with the death, Fox News reported. Authorities said he crashed the party with the group of teen suspects. inciting a fight involving as many as 25 teens, according to a police report. He’s accused of stabbing McGrath in heart during the chaos.
“Multiple witnesses reported that three to four people who were not invited to the party arrived and exited a dark colored Honda SUV,” the police report said. “Witnesses further stated that when the parties exited the vehicle a physical altercation with multiple male participants took place on the front lawn.”
Valle faces one charge of murder and two counts of first-degree assault. Because he is over 15 and his charges include murder, his case was automatically transferred to adult court.
He was released on $2 million bail in May.
