Thousands of Lansing area residents without power in wake of winter storm

LANSING — More than 3,000 utility customers in Greater Lansing were without electrical service Wednesday morning after a storm system brought strong winds and heavy snow to the region.

About 2,500 Consumers Energy customers were in the dark, including about 1,200 in Eaton County and a little more than 1,000 in Clinton County, about 11:30 a.m., according to the utility's outage map. The biggest outages were in the Eaton Rapids and the Eagle Township areas, the map indicated.

About 324 Consumers customers in Ingham County were without power. The utility estimated power would be restored to those areas by Wednesday night.

At its peak, about 65,000 customers were affected, Consumers said. As of 11:30 a.m., about 37,000 remained without power, according to the outage map.

Consumers spokesperson Tracy Wimmer said most of the affected customers are on the west side of the state. Strong winds combined with heavy, wet snow brought down tree limbs and power lines, she said.

About 750 DTE Energy customers in eastern Ingham County and western Livingston County were without power on Wednesday morning, including 17 in the Williamston area.

The Lansing Board of Water & Light reported 17 customers without power shortly before noon.

Grand Ledge Public Schools said a power outage caused Wacousta Elementary School to close on Wednesday morning. Parents were asked to pick up their children.
