Things to do this weekend: Skateboard art show, ‘Western Space Grunge’ concert & more

This weekend’s entertainment options are rather diverse and range from a skateboard art show, a concert by a “Western Space Grunge” group, and a “Dance Odyssey” performance.

Following are details on some of the fun things happening in Wichita this weekend:

Skateboard art at CityArts

Opening 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, City Arts, 334 N. Mead

City Arts will open several new shows in its galleries in honor of First Friday this week including one called “All Hands on Decks: A Skateboard Show.” It features a collection of skateboards decorated by a long list of local artists, including Juanta Wolfe, Priscilla Brown, Ric Dunwoody, Heather Leffel and Jay Jacoby, and it will be in the Boardroom and Balcony Galleries. Jacoby’s fifth graders from Washington Elementary also have decorated skateboards, and theirs will be on display in the Main Hall Gallery. The shows will run from Friday through April 16 and will open with a First Friday reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Admission is free.

Fashion chatter

7 p.m. Friday, Wichita Art Museum, 1400 W. Museum Blvd.

The Wichita Art Museum’s latest Art Chatter event is tied to its current exhibition — “Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art from Paper.” The event will feature presentations by designer Chadwick Armstrong, artist Geli Chavez, designer Brent McNutty, artist Nina Winter, and Jami Frazier, who is the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum’s curator of collections. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the presentations start at 7 p.m. The event is free for WAM members or $15 for non-members. Dance Odyssey

3 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Crown Uptown, 3207 E. Douglas

Amira Dance Productions, a local dance studio, will put on its 48th annual dance show at the Crown Uptown on Saturday. The show will be titled “Dance Odyssey: Phoenix” and will feature eclectic music and colorful costumes. Show times are 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets for both shows are $23.45. Dexter and the Moonrocks

8 p.m. Saturday, Wave, 650 E. Second St.

Wave in Wichita will welcome a headliner this weekend that plays a genre of music many people may not be familiar with: “Western Space Grunge.” Dexter and the Moonrocks, which is based in Abilene, Texas, gained internet fame in the summer of 2021 with its first single, “Couch,” and it followed that with a self-titled EP featuring hits like “Where I Steer” and “Behave.” The band will perform at 8 p.m. on Saturday, and doors open at 7 p.m. The opening act will be local band The Cavves. Tickets for the all-ages show are $20 at waveict.com. Groups of four also can get a special price of $15 a ticket.

‘Seussical Jr.’

Friday through Sunday, Mary Jane Teall Theater, Century II, 225 W. Douglas

Music Theatre for Young People is putting on the show “Seussical Jr.” on Friday and Saturday at the Mary Jane Teall Theater at Century II. The show will last for 60 minutes and will include appearances from Dr. Seuss favorites like Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and more. All ages are welcome at the show, which will be staged at 7 p.m. on Friday, at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $15, free for ages 4 and under, and are available at mtwichita.org.

Jason Boland returns

8 p.m. Thursday, TempleLive, 332 E. First St.

Regular Wichita performers Jason Boland and The Stragglers will bring their Delectric Tour to Wichita’s TempleLive venue on Thursday. The Oklahoma country band, known for songs like “Somewhere Down in Texas,” “Pearl Snaps,” “Tulsa Time’‘ and more, will perform at 8 p.m., and doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $18-$49 at wichita.templelive.com.
