Thierry Despont, Renowned Architect and Designer, Has Died
Thierry Despont, a celebrated French architect and designer known for bringing his eclectic classicism to the transformation of iconic landmarks both in America and in France, died on August 13 at the age of 75.
The French designer famously avoided the public eye. But his low-profile belied his noteworthy client roster, which—in addition to developers—included figures like Calvin Klein, Bill and Melinda Gates, and Mickey Drexler.
Despont was born in Limoges, France. He got his start at a young age, looking up to his father who was also an architect, a job that Despont thought was the “greatest profession in the world.” He followed that career path to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and then to Harvard University, where he earned a master’s degree in city planning and urban design.
After founding his firm, the Office of Thierry W Despont, in 1980, Despont was selected as the associate architect for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty. After such a monumental project, similar commissions followed, including the revitalization of the Frick family’s Pittsburgh mansion, the Clayton.
Restoring historic properties became Despont’s calling card, as the architect was tapped to create opulent residences at the Woolworth Building, to renovate and expand Cartier’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue, and to oversee the reported $450 million makeover of the Ritz Paris.
Despont was also known for his private residential projects, having designed lavish homes for the likes of Calvin Klein and Bill Gates. His work for luxury clients extended skyward too, as the architect did the interiors for 53 West 53—the home of the ELLE DECOR penthouse—as well as 220 Central Park South, which has become one of the most sought-after spots for billionaire buyers.
“His designs, whether in architecture or art, resonated with beauty, innovation, and a deep understanding of human emotion, ‘giving shape to his clients’ dreams,’” reads a statement from his office. “As we remember Thierry, we remember him for his warmth, wit, and humor, and his extraordinary talent to tell stories that captivated us all in the world of his limitless imagination and creativity. He will be greatly missed.”
Despont is survived by his wife, Barbara von Bismarck, and his children: Catherine, Louise, Konstantin, and Alexander.
