Then & Now, Memorial Day: Do you know where this is?

With Jeannette Wooster delivering the national anthem, members of a neighborhood American Legion post gathered on May 21, 1944, for a pre-Memorial Day service.

Such services are being held throughout Central Mass. this weekend.

Frostholm Square — shown in this week's Then photo — is one of dozens of memorial spots in Worcester. This square honors Lt. J. Henry Frostholm and Sgt. Neils E. Frostholm, brothers who were killed in action in World War I.

The memorial square took shape about 1935, after a review by the City Council Military Affairs Committee. Other spots were considered.

In 1944, the holiday fell on May 29. Wooster, who delivered the anthem at a ceremony a week earlier, was active in women's auxiliary activities. Her husband, Howard, was a World War II veteran.
