Dr. Homer Gage was an acclaimed surgeon, often traveling from Worcester to Camp Devens, where he was the chief of surgery during World War I.

In June 1893, he married Mabel Knowles, whose family was part of Crompton & Knowles Loom Works, a major business in the city. In 1922, after years in medicine, Homer took over as president of Crompton & Knowles.

For a wedding present, Mabel's parents had a house built for the Gages. The 20-room mansion — shown in this week's Then photo — was known in social circles as the Gage House. Homer and Mabel were philanthropic, often hosting meetings of nonprofit organizations. In fact, after they both died, the house was turned over to a medical organization that the couple had supported over the years.

The Gage House was torn down in 1960, soon after this photo was taken. By then the medical organization had relocated and an abutting business was looking to expand its parking lot.
