Texas toddler dies after uncle runs over her in driveway

A San Antonio-area toddler has died after being run over while playing in front of her home over the weekend.

Itsel Garcia-Hernandez, 2, died of her injuries Saturday night after her maternal uncle backed into the driveway, unaware the tot was there, Fox San Antonio reports.

The 18-year-old uncle, whose name has not been released, ran over the tot shortly before 11 p.m. local time in Von Ormy, about 15 miles southwest of San Antonio.

He was en route to the house to get information on the arrest of his sister, Itsel’s mother, Maria Hernandez-Gomez, earlier that day for an allegedly false report in 2017.

Though the family has spent years trying to resolve the issue, they say the officer misidentified Hernandez-Gomez as a resident of San Marcos rather than San Antonio, according to the outlet. The former sits about 63 miles northeast of Von Ormy.

Hernandez-Gomez reportedly didn’t learn of her daughter’s death until she bonded out of jail.

Her brother, who has not yet been charged, was not under the influence when the incident occurred, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office told the outlet.

An investigation is still underway.
