Texas Tech football's Jayden York to test waters in transfer portal

Jayden York scored the Texas Tech football team's second touchdown this year in the first quarter of the season opener. It was his first career TD with the Red Raiders and, as it turns out, his last.

York announced Wednesday he's having his name entered into the NCAA transfer. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound tight end from Austin Bowie came to the Red Raiders as a recruited walk-on out of high school and spent four years in the program, working his way up to playing time on offense the past two seasons. He also played on special teams.

York's 2023 season was marred by two Brigham Young players alleging he spat at them during the Cougars' 27-14 victory over the Red Raiders on Oct. 21. York was ejected for one of the instances.

Tech coach Joey McGuire initially defended York in the matter, suggesting his player was wrongly accused. Days later on the Thetford & Ashby Show on Lubbock radio station Double T 97.3 FM, McGuire said, "that situation was handled the very next day, because I will always, I will go to my grave saying you respect the game that you play, from pregame and how you handle yourself all the way through the game."

"I will say this: It was handled even before," McGuire said, "because it didn't have anything to do with the act. It had to do with being ejected from the game. Anytime a player's ejected from the game, they are going to be encouraged the next day very strongly to never be ejected from a game no matter what you're doing."

York caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Shough less than six minutes into the season opener at Wyoming. He finished the regular season with three catches for 30 yards.

The transfer portal opened Monday to undergraduates for a 45-day period. York is the 12th member of this year's team who has or is expected to have his name in the portal. After last season, Tech had 16 scholarship players or walk-ons who earned playing time who transferred out of the program.

Texas Tech tight end Jayden York runs after a catch during a practice before the 2022 season. York, who joined the Red Raiders as a recruited walk-on and worked his way up to being a member of the tight-ends rotation, announced Wednesday he will transfer out of the program.
