Texas Tech football deep snapper Jackson Knotts to have surgery on torn knee ligaments

Texas Tech football player Jackson Knotts, the team's deep snapper for all 38 games of his three-year career, announced Monday on social media he'll undergo surgery soon to repair a major left knee injury he suffered in the regular-season finale Friday at Texas.

Knotts said he suffered tears to the anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and medial patellofemoral ligament. He was hurt in the first quarter of the Red Raiders' 57-7 loss.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound junior came to Texas Tech as a walk-on from Plant City, Florida, and has been the Red Raiders' special-teams snapper since the first game of his freshman season.

He's not yet redshirted so that could be an option for next season, depending on the time frame needed for Knotts's post-surgery rehabilitation.

Tech picked up a commitment in October from deep snapper Rylan Vagana from Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei. Vagana had scholarship offers from four programs, according to the Rivals recruiting service, but pledged to Tech as a walk-on.

Knotts' backup this season, and the player who replaced him early in the Red Raiders' 57-7 loss at Texas, is Jacob Mauch. Backup wide receiver Haydon Wiginton also has trained as a deep snapper. Both have eligibility remaining, Mauch's being the Covid-bonus year.
