Texas Rangers general manager Chris Young announced Corey Seager had surgery for a sports hernia repair on Tuesday.

The Rangers are optimistic that Seager will be ready for Opening Day and don’t consider the injury serious though the shortstop will miss a majority of Spring Training.

If Seager misses time, Ezequiel Durán and Josh Smith could step in as possible replacements.

The injury first appeared during the postseason and the franchise hoped it would improve with rest.

However, after the injury failed to improve, surgery was decided as the best option.

Seager hit .318 with six home runs and 12 RBIs in the 2023 postseason en route to winning his second World Series MVP while suffering through injury.

This is not Seager’s first injury with the Rangers, the World Series MVP suffered a right thumb sprain and hamstring strain during the 2023 season that limited him to 119 games.

The Rangers report to spring training in Surprise, Ariz., on Feb. 15. They open the season on March 28 at Globe Life Field against the Chicago Cubs.
