Texas men's basketball signs two, still waits on 5-star guard Tre Johnson

A pair of top-50 national prospects signed their National Letters of Intent to play for the Texas men’s basketball program on Wednesday, but head coach Rodney Terry hopes that class grows by one during this fall signing window.

Cam Scott, a 6-foot-5 guard, joins 6-8 forward Nic Codie in the Longhorns’ 2024 class, which currently ranks No. 9 nationally in the rankings by On3. That rating will soar if Texas reels in 5-star recruit Tre Johnson, a 6-6 guard from the Dallas area rated as the fifth best prospect in the nation. He was the top-ranked recruit in Texas for the 2024 class before transferring to prep school Link Academy in Missouri for his senior year.

According to 247Sports, Johnson will decide between Texas and Baylor either during the fall signing window or during a later window. He’ll also have professional options in the U.S. and overseas.

Scott, from Lexington, S.C., ranks as the No. 27prospect in the nation by 247 Sports’ composite rankings. During his junior year in 2022-23, he averaged 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.4 steals per game while leading Lexington High School to a 20-7 record and a trip to the state semifinals while earning South Carolina’s Gatorade Player of the Year award.

According to an analysis by On3’s Gerry Hamilton, Scott “has a very impressive blend of smoothness, pace to his game with burst and athletic vertical pop.”

“He plays within the flow of the offense and possesses a very good feel for offensive basketball,” Hamilton said. “Along with being one of the most talented players in the country, Scott possesses the characteristics that will thrive in the culture of the Texas program.”

Codie, a fast-rising prospect at Newman Smith High School in the Dallas suburb of Carrollton, is ranked as the No. 45 in the nation by 247 Sports’ composite rankings and the No. 1 player in the state of Texas for the 2024 class. Codie averaged 16 points and nine rebounds per game as a junior in 2022-23 while leading Newman Smith to a 22-8 record and the District 9-5A championship.

“Codie is a player who has made a steady climb over his high school career, with much of his overall game exploding his past spring and summer,” said Blue Zertuche of Great American Shoot-Out. “Texas is getting a prospect who has the athleticism, length and natural ability to compete at an extremely high level in the SEC. He is skilled, has a nice touch from the elbow area and will extend his game past the three-point arc.”
