Texas man charged with murder after allegedly dragging his mother’s ex-boyfriend behind truck

A Texas man who allegedly walked in on a fight between his mother and her ex-boyfriend has been accused of beating the man, tying him to the back of his truck, dragging him “a lengthy distance” and then setting the vehicle on fire.

Robert Eugene Hoffpauir, 37, has been arrested and charged with the murder of 60-year-old Roman Rodriguez, the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.

Hoffpauir and his mother, Timey Ann Cole, were at their Rye home when Rodriguez showed up and a “domestic disturbance” began between Cole and Rodriguez, according to police.

Hoffpauir allegedly beat Rodriguez “severely,” then tied a tow strap between Rodriguez’s waist and the back of Rodriguez’s pick-up truck.

Then, Hoffpauir dragged Rodriguez behind his own truck “for a lengthy distance down the road” before abandoning both on the road and setting the truck on fire, according to police.

An autopsy will determine at which point in the assault Rodriguez died.

Hoffpauir is being held on a $1 million.
