Texas man, 71, ‘mauled to death’ by 7 dogs whose owner is arrested, officials say

A 71-year-old man died in Texas last week after being attacked by seven dogs, officials said.

Freddy Garcia of Fresno was “mauled to death” on Monday by the canines, causing authorities to arrest their owner, identified as 47-year-old Samuel Cartwright, the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office said.

Each of the dogs was a pit bull mix, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities say they have captured all the seven of the dogs.

“Cartwright remains in custody at the Fort Bend County Jail and has been charged with Attack by Dog resulting in Death, which is a second degree felony,” the sheriff’s office said Friday.

“His bond is set at $100,000.”

Frenso is located in southeastern Texas, about 20 miles south of Houston.

“This devastating tragedy didn’t have to happen,” Fort Bend Sheriff Eric Fagan said, according to ABC News.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the Garcia family and his neighbors as they adjust to the loss of Mr. Garcia.”
