Texas high school football state champs, contenders featured on WFAA Friday nights
Twenty of the top high school football teams in Dallas-Fort Worth will be live streamed during the 2022 season by WFAA, an ABC affiliate.
The schedule kicks off Aug. 26, the first Friday night of the Texas high school football regular season, with Midlothian Heritage hosting defending Class 4A Division 1 state champ Stephenville at Midlothian ISD Stadium.
All football games can be seen across WFAA’s digital platforms, including WFAA.com, WFAA’s YouTube channel, WFAA’s mobile app and the station’s brand new WFAA+ streaming app.
WFAA is in its fifth year broadcasting games. WFAA sports anchor Mike Leslie will once again serve as the play-by play announcer all season long.
It won’t be the only time Heritage will play on WFAA. The Jaguars, who moved up to Class 5A, will travel to Mansfield to face Summit on Oct. 7. Summit has reached the state semifinals in back-to-back years.
Another state champ is set to play on WFAA as Dallas South Oak Cliff visits state powerhouse DeSoto in Week 3 on Sept. 10. SOC is the No. 1 team in the 5A state rankings. The Golden Bears won a state championship last December, the first for any Dallas ISD school in more than 50 years.
In Week 4, fans will get a chance to watch the top quarterback in Texas, Oklahoma commit Jackson Arnold as the Denton Guyer Wildcats host Prosper on Sept. 16.
The battle of the red rail will also hit center stage as Colleyville Heritage plays Grapevine on Sept. 30 from Mustang-Panther Stadium. The Mustangs and Panthers are back in the same district after Heritage dropped to 5A D2 this season.
Two other big district showdowns are set in consecutive weeks. Aledo and Denton Ryan, the No. 3 and No. 2 ranked 5A teams in the state, will play in Denton on Oct. 21. Two of the longest district winning streaks will be on the line. Aledo holds the national record as the Bearcats haven’t lost a district game since the 2007 season.
The following week, DeSoto returns to WFAA as the Eagles host district rival and fellow state powerhouse Duncanville on Oct. 28. Duncanville enters the season No. 4 in Class 6A. The Panthers have gone to the state title game three of the past four seasons.
