Texas crash involving intoxicated driver, golf cart kills 4, including 2 kids, police say

Two kids were among the four people killed when their golf cart was struck in a multi-car crash that allegedly involved an intoxicated driver, officials said.

The incident occurred late Saturday in Galveston, Texas, when an SUV went through a stop sign and hit a pickup truck, local police said. The pickup truck then crashed into the golf cart, which had a driver and five passengers, according to officials.

Police identified the driver of the SUV as 45-year-old Miguel Espinoza, who was arrested on four counts of intoxication manslaughter.

The driver of the golf cart died at the scene, while two minors and an adult woman were pronounced dead after being hospitalized, police said.

Another adult and minor who were aboard the golf cart were said to be in critical condition after being hospitalized. None of the people who were on the golf cart have been publicly identified.

Galveston is located in Southeast Texas on the Gulf of Mexico and is a popular beach destination for vacationers. The golf cart appeared to be driven legally at the time of the crash, Galveston police Sgt. Derek Gaspard said.

Espinoza sustained minor injuries, as did a passenger in his car, according to police. Espinoza’s bond was set at $400,000.
