Texas chain Perry’s Steakhouse no longer plans to open near Leawood Hereford House

Houston-based Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille planned a massive restaurant on the north side of Leawood’s Town Center Plaza.

The 12,681-square-foot building — which would have been one of the largest restaurants in the metro — was scheduled to open in early 2024 near locally owned Hereford House.

Now the chain said it no longer plans to go in the center, but it is still looking in the Leawood area.

In a statement, Lesa Sorrentino, chief strategy officer, said: “Unfortunately, Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille will not be joining Town Plaza Center in Leawood, Kansas. The landlord was unable to receive the necessary anchor tenant approval for the proposed site. Perry’s continues to consider locations in the Leawood community and hopes to serve you soon!”

Officials with Town Center Plaza said they would not have a comment on Perry’s at this time.

The Perry family opened their first location in Houston in 1979 — a modest meat market that they called Perry’s Butcher Shop (still operating as Perry & Sons Market & Grille). In 1986, they added tables and chairs for dine-in, and they soon expanded with more locations.

They opened the first Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille in 1993 in Houston, and the company now has 20 locations in seven states, including Chicago, Denver and Nashville.

The menu includes filet mignon, prime rib-eye, braised beef short ribs, spaghetti squash primavera, crusted ahi tuna and 17 sides, from corn brûlée to cauliflower au gratin.

The Town Center Plaza location was to have an expansive main dining room, a kitchen behind glass, a bar, four private dining rooms and patio.

It would have been across from Hereford House. Officials with Hereford House declined to comment.

Leawood approved Perry’s plan a year ago. In a statement, Mark Klein, the city’s director of planning, said: “I talked with Town Center Plaza and they said the project would not be moving forward. The City of Leawood did not play a role in the decision. The Preliminary Plan and Final Plan for the restaurant were approved by the Governing Body on March 21, 2022.”
