New Terminator Anime Teased From Netflix

Netflix has teased a new anime based on the classic sci-fi franchise The Terminator.

Shown as part of Netflix’s Geeked Week, the announcement doesn’t give much away, other than the series is set in 1997. Well, we say 1997, but this is a time travel story so it could be set in any timeline. It’s worth noting the actual date teased - August 30th, 1997 - is before the events of Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

Ghost in the Shell and B: The Beginning studio Production IG is helping out with the anime, with showrunner Mattson Tomlin. Tomlin’s credits include The Batman and its upcoming sequel, and he’s also working on the TV adaptation of Dark Horse Comics’ Fear Agent for Amazon.

Terminator was originally announced back in 2001, with Netflix’s anime boss John Derderian stating that “Terminator is one of the most iconic sci-fi stories ever created - and has only grown more relevant to our world over time. The new animated series will explore this universe in a way that has never been done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this amazing new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans.”

Tomlin promises the show will “break conventions and subvert expectations” for the franchise.

The Terminator franchise has had its ups and downs. The first two movies are highly-regarded, but standards slipped for the next four, and even the return of original stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton couldn’t save 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate from a lukewarm reception on release.

Terminator has also been given the multimedia treatment, with TV, comic book, games and theme park attractions.
