The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, has received some rave first reactions after its first screening.

An unfinished cut of the film, which has been written by Seth Rogen and his frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg, was shown at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival for fans, with director Jeff Rowe present. It received a six-minute standing ovation, according to Comic Book, and lots of positive reactions on social media.

The early online buzz praises the film's animation, which is similar to Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its recently released sequel, as well as the references for fans, and for a good amount of humour from the writers and cast.

"Graphically, it's a great success, with a very pronounced style that, despite some overly detailed shots, comes across perfectly. A future gem of animation from @paramount and @Nickelodeon and cool @mikrosanimation. Love it!" wrote journalist Diolot Clément.

Filmmaker Ryan Grobins added: "The art was amazing, the soundtrack was on point, the sound design was great and the writing was hilarious!"

Crunchyroll's Mohamed Mir shared a video of the standing ovation, alongside: "TMNT: Mutant Mayhem was so funny. I can't say much more other than the movie is awesome, GREAT references and I can't wait to see it again (finished). The crowd's reaction shows the love for the movie and Jeff Rowe"

Another lucky viewer said: "Cowabunga! Mutant Mayhem is action packed, hilarious, colorful and overall just a ton of fun. Easily one of the best iterations since Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990."

"Just saw an unfinished cut of TMNT: Mutant Mayhem and had soooooo much fun. Could watch these characters hang out for hours and hours. 2 ATCQ [hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest] needle drops made me happy. Maybe some will bristle against the sheer amount of references in the film. I found it charming and natural for Gen Z kids," shared someone else.

Speaking of the cast, there are a lot of big names providing their voices for Mutant Mayhem. We've got Rose Byrne, John Cena, Jackie Chan, Ayo Edebiri, Ice Cube, Natasia Demetriou, Giancarlo Esposito, Post Malone, Paul Rudd, Maya Rudolph, and Rudd himself.

The premise sees our four protagonists, brothers Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Donatello and Raphael, get sick of life in the sewers and try and become beloved heroes on the surface world. Mayhem ensues.

The franchise has had a few attempts at big screen success, with a trio of solidly performing live-action films from the 1990s, a well-received CGI animated movie from 2007, and two Michael Bay films that started off critically panned but financially successful before doing a complete 180.

Over on the television side, the most recent adaptation of the franchise was Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which wrapped up in 2020 but had a movie release on Netflix last year.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is set to be released on August 2 in cinemas.
