The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie Mutant Mayhem has received a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The animated film, which attracted rave initial reactions last month, follows the iconic foursome Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Donatello and Raphael as they try to become heroes on the surface world.

Mutant Mayhem has now had a proper critical assessment from reviewers – and they've been overwhelmingly positive, with the movie currently sitting at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.

In a four-star review for The Daily Telegraph, Robbie Collin said its makers "have gone so far above and beyond the call of churning out another Turtles film that it stands on its own merits as a thrillingly kinetic piece of pop art".

In a similarly rave review, The Independent's Clarisse Loughrey said the movie "blends a hyper-aware but affectionate love of the franchise’s past with the look and lingo of the present," and that "it’s learnt all the right lessons from the current Spider-Verse craze".

Empire's John Nugent called it "inventively animated, giddily funny, and a surprisingly authentic take on the outsider experience", arguing "it is virtually impossible not to be charmed by these reptilian bros".

"Only 33 years, seven movies and a cumulative production spend of roughly half a billion dollars, and they've finally arrived at a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film that's, you know, comparatively solid," added The Times' Kevin Maher in a three-star review.

The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw called the movie "unexpectedly funny" in a three-star review, while TheWrap's Tomris Laffly said it "moves just right through an economic 90+ minutes without overstaying its welcome despite some occasionally overworked story machinations".

Mutant Mayhem has been co-written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and directed by Jeff Rowe (The Mitchells vs the Machines).

It also boasts an impressive cast, which includes Rose Byrne, John Cena, Jackie Chan, Ayo Edebiri, Ice Cube, Natasia Demetriou, Giancarlo Esposito, Post Malone, Paul Rudd, Maya Rudolph and Paul Rudd.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is set to be released on August 2.
