Teen suspect’s mother arrested in killing of 13-year-old Florida girl

The mother of a 14-year-old Florida boy accused of killing a 13-year-old girl by stabbing her 114 times was arrested Saturday.

Crystal Smith, mom to Aiden Fucci, was charged with tampering with evidence, police said in a press release. Aiden is charged with murdering Tristyn Bailey; he pleaded not guilty Thursday.

Cops said Smith heavily washed Aiden’s jeans in their St. Johns County home after Tristyn was killed, local NBC affiliate WTLV reported. Both the jeans and a bathroom drain in the house tested positive for blood, according to police.

Crystal Smith, left, was charged Saturday with tampering with evidence in the case of her son, Aiden Fucci, who is accused of first-degree murder.

Tristyn was reported missing in the morning of May 9, having last been seen hanging out with friends the night before in Jacksonville, one county north of St. Johns. Her body was found the same day she was reported missing.

Aiden, who attended the same school as Tristyn, was arrested shortly after. He was seen in a social media photo flashing a peace sign from the back of a cop car and captioning the snap, “Hey guys has [anybody] seen Tristyn lately.”

Police said surveillance video from Aiden’s home shows his mother washing his jeans and then inspecting them to make sure there was no evidence of blood, according to WTLV.

Smith, 35, turned herself in to police Saturday, but was released shortly afterward after posting $25,000 bond, the Florida Times-Union reported.

Aiden is charged with first-degree murder and is therefore being tried as an adult under Florida law. He has been held in Duval County Jail without bond since his arrest.
