A teen has been shot in Milwaukee 3 days in a row, police say; teens are also suspected as shooters

For three days in a row a teenager has been shot in the city of Milwaukee, police say.

In all incidents, no agency has reported a death, but one teen is in serious condition at a hospital. In two of the shootings, the suspect was also a minor.

On Wednesday, shortly before 5:30 p.m., a 12-year-old was shot in the 1900 block of North 24th Street and transported to a hospital with serious injuries, according to police. Authorities said they are seeking a known 13-year-old regarding the incident.

On Tuesday, a 17-year-old was shot in the 7900 block of West Ruby Avenue at about 7 p.m. They were transported to a hospital and expected to survive, police said. No one has been arrested in connection to the shooting and police said they are seeking unknown suspects.

On Monday, shortly after noon, on the 3700 block of North 10th Street, a 14-year-old was shot and transported to a hospital with nonfatal injuries, police said. A 16-year-old boy was arrested in connection to the shooting, which was the result of an argument, according to police.

For years, police and public health officials in Milwaukee have railed against how easily accessible firearms are, even for young people or those who are legally barred from possessing them. But lawmakers at the federal level and the Republican-controlled Wisconsin Legislature have taken little to no action to restrict their access.

Ever since 2020, when gun sales skyrocketed and the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted daily life, children in Milwaukee have died by homicide and have been injured in shootings at about twice the rate of pre-pandemic years, according to data from the Medical College of Wisconsin.

In Milwaukee, from 2016 through 2019, about nine children died by homicide every year and 49 were injured in shootings, according to data from the Medical College of Wisconsin. From 2020 through the first 10½ months of 2023, an average of 24 children died by homicide every year and another 103 were injured in shootings.

A Journal Sentinel analysis in November also found that accidental shootings involving children have doubled in Milwaukee in the four years since the pandemic.
