Teen fashion retailer Rue21 in Topeka will close its doors at West Ridge Mall. Here's why.

Rue21 in Topeka is closing its doors at West Ridge Mall at 1901 SW. Wanamaker Road.

The teen fashion retailer plans to close all of its 543 U.S. stores within the next two months while conducting large "going out of business" sales, according to court documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, Reuters reported.

West Ridge Mall manager Casey Richardson said she hasn't been informed when the Topeka location will officially close its doors.

"We're sad to see rue21 go but understand that this is at a company level and not just our mall," Richardson said.

Rue21 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for a third time on May 2. It is seeking to sell its intellectual property.

Storewide sale and deals in Topeka location

In the Topeka location, all merchandise throughout the store are on sale. Clothing is marked at 40% off original prices, buy one get one free and other deals.

"It sounds like they are doing that in waves," Richardson told The Capital-Journal. "They've already closed about 100 stores, and they are just trying to liquidate as much merchandise as possible before they close all of their stores."

All sales are final, and returns aren't allowed. Fitting rooms can't be used any longer as the entrance doors have been closed off.

Team members say they haven't been notified when the final day for the store will be in Topeka.

"From what I have gathered at the store level, they are also kind of out of the loop," Richardson said. "They don't know much."

Rue21 has filed for bankruptcy twice before

The retailer based in Warrendale, Pennsylvania, has filed for bankruptcy twice before — in 2003 and in 2017 when it closed 400 stores and cut about $700 million in debt.

Reuters reported that rue21 has about 4,900 employees and $194.4 million in debt.

Rue21 tried to sell its business but couldn't find a buyer willing to pay more than it would earn by liquidating its inventory and shutting down stores, Reuters reported. It has hired the financial consultant Gordon Brothers to help with store closing sales.
