A teen driver drowned after his car went off the road, flipped and landed on its roof in water, Montana officials told news outlets.

Marshall Tucker Edwards, a 16-year-old from Park City, died in the crash Tuesday, Sept 20, Montana Highway Patrol told KTVQ.

The teen was driving a Honda Accord near Laurel late at night when the roads were slick from rainfall, the Billings Gazette reported. The car went off the side of the road just after midnight and slid sideways as it re-entered it, officials told the news outlet.

The car rotated, crashed into a tree and flipped, MTN News reported. It crashed into water and landed on its roof, officials said.

Edwards and a 16-year-old passenger were both wearing seatbelts at the time, KTVQ reported. The passenger was injured and taken to a Billings hospital, according to the Gazette.

Edwards drowned at the scene and was reported dead at 2:25 a.m., the news outlet reported.

Officials told news outlets drugs and alcohol are not suspected in the crash. Speed and the road conditions at the time are likely factors, officials told MTN News.

Laurel is about 15 miles northeast of Billings.
