Teen arrested after crash killed 71-year-old Shawnee man, injured 69-year-old passenger

A Johnson County teenager has been arrested and was being held pending charges in a multi-vehicle crash that killed a 71-year-old driver and injured his 69-year-old passenger, a police spokesman said.

The driver killed in the crash was identified Monday as Leland R. Scott of Shawnee, said Major Jim Baker with the Shawnee Police Department. His passenger remains in the hospital in critical condition.

The teen, a 17-year-old from Shawnee, was being held while the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office reviews the case, Baker said.

The crash involving multiple cars occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Blackfish Parkway and Lackman Road in Shawnee. Scott and his passenger were the only ones injured, police said.

The intersection remained closed for several hours after the crash while the Shawnee Police Department’s traffic safety unit investigated the fatal crash.

Police continued to investigate the crash Monday, Baker said.
