Training camp begins this week and the Broncos still need to choose their quarterback. Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater will battle it out to start Week One (at the Giants) under center.

Head coach Vic Fangio has indicated that Lock and Bridgewater will be splitting practice reps for the foreseeable future. Lock said Wednesday that the competition has fueled his development. The 2019 second rounder is doing what he can to win the job while also learning from Bridgewater. The veteran Bridgewater has embraced the QB battle too.

“At the end of the day, we’re all competing to make this team a better team,” Bridgewater told Ben Swanson of DenverBroncos.com. “Throughout training camp, we want to come out here and practice with a purpose. So, if it’s 50 percent of the reps that I’m getting and 50 percent of the reps Drew’s getting and [QB] Brett [Rypien] is getting his reps, it’s all about just making our squad better.”

Bridgewater is coming off his best season as a pro. He produced the highest passer rating of his career for Carolina in 2020 while surpassing 3,700 passing yards. But at the end of the Louisville alum’s one year deal, the Panthers opted to bet on the potential of Sam Darnold. So Bridewater signed another one year contract––this time with Denver–for $11.5 million.

“One of my great mentors always says, ‘Just get your team to the end zone,’” Bridgewater said. “When I’m out there with the reps that I get, I’m talking to the guys in the huddle, just trying to maximize that rep the best way I can.”

Like he did in New Orleans and Carolina, Bridgewater continues to bet on himself. Even after a series of devastating injuries derailed his stint in Minnesota, Bridgewater has shown that he can still spearhead a steady offense.

“I’m a survivor, you know what I mean?” Bridgewater said. “You can throw me in the jungle and I’m gonna come out with a fur coat [and] a headband that I made out of some leaves.”
