Teacher plans to give back after surprisingly big Kentucky Lottery scratch-off win

An Indiana man won $100,000 playing Kentucky Lottery after purchasing a $30 Break Fort Knox scratch-off ticket last month at Smoker Friendly Discount Tobacco in Milton.

The man, who asked Kentucky Lottery officials to remain unnamed, said he’s not a frequent lottery player. He purchased the ticket with his wife in a spur-of-the-moment decision when picking up a snack from the store.

“We had a little extra cash and thought why not?,” he said. “It was the luck of the draw, I guess.”

According to Kentucky Lottery’s website, the odds of winning any money off of a Break Fort Knox ticket are 1 in 2.48, with prizes ranging from $30 to roughly $2.2 million. The $100,000 prize is the second highest possible.

The man said he waited a week to turn in the ticket.

“[We] took it home then just put it in the cabinet,” he said. “I was itching to turn it in.”

The man turned in the ticket to Kentucky Lottery March 19. He got a check for $72,000 after taxes.

The winner, a teacher and sports coach, said he wants to use the money to invest in the people in his life.

“I want to give back,” he said. “As a teacher, I feel like I don’t deserve this. I want to give back to my team, I want to surprise my friends.”

Smoker Friendly Discount Tobacco in Milton will get $1,000 for selling the winning ticket.

The March winner is not the only to win big on the Kentucky Lottery game. Last summer a Lexington man also won $100,000 on Break Fort Knox.
