A 47-year-old teacher died in a fiery crash after she and another driver collided, according to authorities in Pennsylvania.

Christine Woodward was driving a GMC Acadia east on State Route 6 in Sullivan Township, while the other driver was traveling west in a Jeep Grand Cherokee, Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release.

Their vehicles collided as they approached an intersection shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, officials said.

A fire started near Woodward’s SUV, causing her vehicle to burn, according to the release. The other driver — a 35-year-old man — tried to pull her from the Acadia, but he was unable to save her.

Woodward, of Troy, died on scene, officials said, and the man was taken to a hospital with “significant injuries.”

Woodward worked as an elementary teacher with the Troy Area School District for almost 15 years, according to a Facebook post from the district. Officials described her death as “tragic.”

“She was an active member of our booster clubs and was considered a mother figure to many of our students,” the district continued. “Ms. Woodward has been a caring and valued member of our team for many years and will be missed greatly by staff and students alike. She will be remembered as a dedicated staff member who, over the years, made so many strong connections with whom she encountered. Her passion for education was evident daily. She taught her students with high expectations and great flourish.”

She was also a mom of three, the Troy Trojans 3 Point Club said.

“Chris was always smiling and kind with her upbeat attitude that never let us down. Even if we were all flying by the seat of our pants,” the high school basketball club said in a Facebook post. “ ... She was a very caring, kind and compassionate person especially when it came to her 3 children.”

Woodward was the president of the Troy Trojans 3 Point Club, which described her death as “a huge loss.”

The fatal crash is under investigation, police said.

Troy is in northern Pennsylvania, about 190 miles northwest of Philadelphia.
