TCU wide receiver Savion Williams has career day in Horned Frogs’ loss against Texas

TCU wide receiver Savion Williams had the best game of his career as the Horned Frogs narrowly fell 29-26 to the No. 7 Texas Longhorns at Amon G. Carter Stadium on Saturday.

Williams set career highs in catches (11) and yards (164) with a touchdown. Coming into their game against Texas, the Horned Frogs were missing Dylan Wright and Jack Bech from the receiving core.

Thus coach Sonny Dykes and TCU needed someone to step up offensively.

Williams did that.

Quarterback Josh Hoover praised Williams’ performance following the game.

“Unbelievable,” said Hoover, “Just so thankful for that guy, he’s, he’s a gamer when the lights are shining the brightest, he comes out and plays.”

Coming into Saturday’s game ,Williams had 14 catches for 146 yards with two touchdowns in the Horned Frogs’ previous nine games this season.

After the game, Williams said the Horned Frogs must change their mindset if they wanted to win their final two games.

“Keep fighting I mean, some people went into the game thinking we weren’t gonna win. Some people went into the game thinking we were gonna win,” said Williams, “But going into the last two games of the season, I’d say everyone needs to have a different mindset.”

TCU closes out the season against Baylor and No. 17 Oklahoma needing to win both games to become bowl-eligible.

Williams, a Texas native, starred at Marshall High School en route to becoming the No. 28 wide receiver in the nation according to 247 Sports before committing to TCU.

Williams had a slow start to his TCU career with only seven catches for 79 yards in his first 14 games but broke out during last year’s run to the CFP title game with the fourth most catches (29), yards (392) and receiving touchdowns (4) on the team.

Williams is now a junior in his fourth season with the Horned Frogs looking to help replace the void that was left when Quentin Johnston and Derius Davis declared for the NFL Draft.

Williams did just that against Texas and had a simple reason for his success.

“Him [Hoover] just getting me the ball,” said Williams, “He started getting the ball to me in the first half and it started like a spark that got me going in the first half and then it just picked up.”

Williams’ 42-yard catch with a little under a minute left in the third quarter led to TCU’s first touchdown and jump-started the offense which made a furious comeback attempt in the fourth, outscoring Texas 20-3.

TCU head coach Sonny Dykes praised Williams for how he played throughout the game.

“He [Savion Williams] played incredibly hard, got banged up a couple of times, and kept coming back in and I mean, just played with really a ton of toughness,” said Dykes, “

Williams scored his first touchdown of the game with 3:20 remaining to pull TCU to within three and give the Horned Frogs a chance to complete the comeback.

However, TCU’s defense couldn’t get the last stop they needed and the Longhorns were able to run out the clock to win the game.

Hoover praised Williams for who he is as a teammate, pass catcher and person saying he was a great teammate.

TCU plays its final home game of the season against Baylor on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Amon G. Carter Stadium on ESPN+.
