TCU tried to win a national championship without its star running back.

Kendre Miller did not play in Monday’s title game vs. No. 1 Georgia. Miller suffered a MCL sprain late in the first half of the Horned Frogs’ Fiesta Bowl win over Michigan on New Year’s Eve.

Miller was dressed out for pregame warmups, but had a large brace on his right knee and was a minimal participant in warmup drills.

When the teams’ starting lineups were announced, Emari Demercado was announced as the starter at running back. A first-team All-Big 12 selection, Miller rushed for 1,399 yards and 17 touchdowns during TCU’s magical campaign. The Fiesta Bowl could be his last game as Miller could be a day two pick in the NFL draft.

Demercado stepped up for Miller and rushed for 150 yards against the vaunted Wolverines defense. He’ll need a similar performance against another elite run defense.

Demercado rushed for 600 yards and six touchdowns this season while spelling Miller. Emani Bailey and Trent Battle will have bigger roles as well against Georgia.

Demercado rushed for 59 yards on 14 carries in the championship. The Horned Frogs only ran for 36 yards on 28 carries against the stout Georgia defense.
