TCU football coach Sonny Dykes receives raise and contract extension

TCU coach Sonny Dykes has received a contract extension after leading the program to one of the best seasons in its history.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel was the first to report the news. A source confirmed the extension to the Star-Telegram. Dykes gained an additional year to his contract through 2028 and a pay raise.

The raise will put Dykes near the top of the Big 12. Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy had one of the league’s most lucrative contracts and made $7.5 million in 2022.

The extension makes a ton of sense for TCU after Dykes led the program to its first College Football Playoff appearance and a 12-1 record. Dykes is the Walter Camp Coach of the Year and a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award.

TCU was originally picked to finish seventh in the Big 12 in the preseason media polls, but vastly exceeded expectations. The Horned Frogs will battle No. 2 Michigan in Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 31 in one of the CFP’s semifinal games.

Under Dykes’ leadership, the Horned Frogs captivated national audiences with dramatic comebacks and one of the best offenses in the country led by Heisman Trophy finalist Max Duggan. The defense also took strides and improved across the board in Dykes’ first year.

Dykes is also doing work off the field as the Horned Frogs are currently on pace to have one of the best recruiting classes in program history. TCU’s 2023 class is ranked No. 19 in the nation, according to 247Sports, and the Horned Frogs aren’t finished yet on the trail or on the field.
