Taylor Swift's career trajectory is honestly a whirlwind of iconic moments, from her massive country music debut as a teen to surprise album drops and her record-breaking Eras Tour. She's earned impressive accolades that cemented herself as a pop culture icon throughout her nearly two-decade-long career and she continues to keep Swifties on their toes with her delightfully sporadic Taylor's Version drops. A peak example? That'd be this year's Grammys, where Midnights won Album of the Year. She made history and became the only artist to win four times, the first woman to win the award two times, and the only woman to win three times as a lead artist. 😮💨

That being said! Her songwriting has made her a household name, and we couldn't think of a better way to celebrate the release of her eleventh (!!!) album, than by revisiting all her eras. Taylor Swift

Taylor was only 16 when she released her self-titled debut album with Big Machine Records on October 24, 2006. Not only is this the album that started it all—it features early aughts hits like "Tim McGraw," "Our Song," and "Should've Said No." It introduced her as country music's newest it girl and even landed her a Best New Artist nomination at the 2008 Grammys.

Fearless

Taylor's sophomore album, Fearless, was released on November 11, 2008 (hello, angel numbers!) and it's truly what catapulted Tay from country fame to mainstream mania. Ahem, allow me to lay out the hits that this album brought to us: "Love Story," "You Belong With Me," "Fifteen," and "White Horse." It also spawned fan favorites "Other Side of the Door," "The Way I Loved You," and "Forever & Always." Tay broke records as the youngest artist to win Album of the Year at the 2010 Grammys—and she held that title before Billie Eilish snagged the award a decade later. According to Billboard, Fearless is also the most-awarded album in country music history.

Speak Now

Amid the record-breaking success and momentum of Fearless, Tay received criticism from the general public and industry vets who claimed she relied too much on co-writers. So, she wrote every song on her third album, Speak Now, entirely on her own and released it on October 25, 2010. Per Rolling Stone, she said,"In the past two years, I've experienced a lot of things that I've been dying to write about. A lot of things I wanted to say in the moment that I didn't. It just so happened that the songs that made the cut on the album were the ones I wrote myself, so, wish me luck."

It turns out she didn't need it, as the album skyrocketed to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Chart and earned more than 100 awards. "Mean" picked up Grammys for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance. Two Speak Now tracks ("Mine" and "Mean") were even featured on Glee, which was pretty much a measuring stick for cultural zeitgeist at the time.

Red

The original version of Red dropped on October 22, 2012, and according to an interview with Yahoo! Music at the time, it was time for Taylor to step out of her country comfort zone. "When you're making album 4, you have two choices: You can either do things the way that you have always done them, and then you're forming a pattern of doing things the same way, or you can switch it up and go outside your comfort zone," she told the publication of her decision to work with producers like Max Martin and Shellback. "And for me, my comfort zone is writing songs alone. So I just thought, what if I were to indulge those curiosities that I've always had?"

By the time Red was released, Taylor was out here casually breaking records. Case in point: Red spent seven weeks on top of the Billboard 200 chart, which made her the first female artist and the second act after the Beatles to have three consecutive albums spend at least six weeks at No. 1.

The cover and lyrical direction of Taylor's fourth album pulled inspiration from Joni Mitchell's 1971 album, Blue, and outlined themes from finding new love to grappling with the momentum of fame. Red experimented with pop and electronic elements, included collaborations with Ed Sheeran and Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody, and reportedly reflected on her romance with Jake Gyllenhaal. It was up for four awards at the 2014 Grammys, where Taylor performed an emotional piano rendition of "All Too Well."

1989

Taylor officially switched genres on October 27, 2014, when she released her first pop album, 1989. She swapped her country sound for '80s-inspired synths and multidimensional garage band-inspired production. It also marked the first album she made with her bestie, Jack Antonoff. Taylor recruited her longtime collaborator Nathan Chapman, Max Martin, Shellback, Ryan Tedder, and Imogen Heap to produce her fifth album, which she shared with fans in a secret session before its official release.

1989 also saw The Squad at its pop culture peak and catapulted Taylor's fame to another level as it spent 11 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. It was also certified 9x platinum and spawned some of Tay's most recognizable songs like "Shake It Off," "Blank Space," "Style," "Bad Blood," and "Wildest Dreams." It's safe to say that something definitely shifted after she dropped the original version of 1989, because the album earned her a third Album of the Year Grammy in 2016.

Reputation

Fresh off the Great Kimye War of 2016, Taylor went rogue and avoided any public appearances, interviews, and social media until the release of Reputation on November 10, 2017. Her once-secret relationship with Joe Alwyn reportedly inspired tracks on the album and was then made public when the album dropped (and sold 1.3 million units in its first week).

Tay made very few appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Saturday Night Live and performed at Capital UK's Jingle Bell Ball. She then embarked on her first stadium tour with Charli XCX and Camila Cabello, and of course, released a concert film exclusively on Netflix in 2018. The Reputation Stadium Tour grossed $345.7 million, becoming the highest-grossing U.S. and North American tour at the time (until Tay broke her own record with the Eras Tour, lol).

Lover

Once Lover dropped on August 23, 2019 (8+2+3 = 13, JFYI), Taylor was fully back in the public eye. It marked her first release under Universal Music Group and Republic Records—meaning, she fully owns the masters going forward. "There are so many ways in which this album feels like a new beginning," Taylor told Vogue at the time. "This album is really a love letter to love, in all of its maddening, passionate, exciting, enchanting, horrific, tragic, wonderful glory." Along with production by Jack Antonoff, Lover featured collaborations with Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco, Joel Little, St. Vincent, and The Chicks.

Ahead of the album's release, Taylor dropped her LGBTQ+ anthem, "You Need to Calm Down," along with a petition supporting the Equality Act. The music video featured a bunch of cameos from queer celebrities and allies, including Katy Perry, Ellen DeGeneres, Adam Rippon, RuPaul, Ciara, Laverne Cox, Ryan Reynolds, the Queer Eye cast (Tan France, Karamo Brown, Jonathan Van Ness, Antoni Porowski, Bobby Berk), Dexter Mayfield, Hanna Hart, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and his husband Justin Mikita, Adam Lambert, Todrick Hall, Hayley Kiyoko, Billy Porter, and Crystal Lockhart.

Partially inspired by her romance with Joe Alwyn, Lover introduced hits like "Cruel Summer," "The Man," and "Cornelia Street."

Folklore

When her Lover Fest stadium tour fell through because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Taylor surprised fans with the release of her eighth album, Folklore on July 24, 2020. "Surprise 🤗 Tonight at midnight I’ll be releasing my 8th studio album, folklore; an entire brand new album of songs I’ve poured all of my whims, dreams, fears, and musings into," she wrote in her official announcement.

Tay recorded the album (as well as a Disney+ special) at Long Pond Studios in Hudson Valley, New York, with Jack Antonoff and The National's Aaron Dessner. She also wrote songs with Joe Alwyn (under the pseudonym William Bowery) and virtually worked with Bon Iver. Folklore—which diverted from the pop sound Taylor had been crafting since 1989's release—won Album of the Year at the 2021 Grammys, where she performed a medley of "Cardigan," "August," and Evermore's "Willow."

Evermore

Speaking of Evermore, Taylor dropped it on December 11, 2020—less than six months after Folklore made its mark on pop culture. "To put it plainly, we just couldn’t stop writing songs. To try and put it more poetically, it feels like we were standing on the edge of the folklorian woods and had a choice: to turn and go back or to travel further into the forest of this music. We chose to wander deeper in," Taylor wrote along with her official announcement.

As Folklore's sister album, Evermore drew comparisons to poet Emily Dickinson and features fan favorites like "Ivy," "Champagne Problems," and "Right Where You Left Me."

Fearless (Taylor's Version)

On April 9, 2021, the Taylor's Version rollout officially commenced with the re-release of Fearless. Tay officially teased "Love Story (Taylor's Version)" on Good Morning America and introduced the concept of tracks "From the Vault"—aka songs that didn't make the album the first time around.

Fearless'vault tracks include collaborations with Maren Morris and Keith Urban as well as "Mr. Perfectly Fine," which seemingly calls back to her short-lived romance with Joe Jonas.

Red (Taylor's Version)

If you thought the Red era was iconic, then Red (Taylor's Version) gave it a run for its money on November 12, 2021. Not only did Taylor collaborate with Elvira and release vault tracks with Phoebe Bridgers, Ed Sheeran, and Chris Stapleton, but she dropped the highly-anticipated 10-minute version of her magnum opus, "All Too Well" and directed a short film starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O'Brien.

During an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Taylor reflected on writing the song during her Speak Now tour rehearsals. "The band sort of joined in, and I started ad-libbing what I was going through and what I was feeling, and it went on, and the song kept building and building and building in intensity, and the song just went on for about, you know, 10 to 15 minutes of us doing this...At the end of the day, my mom came up to my sound guy, and she's like, 'Is there any chance that you recorded that?' and he was like, 'Yep.'"

Important to note that Taylor also dropped a music video for her vault track "I Bet You Think About Me," which was directed by her bestie Blake Lively and featured Miles Teller, Keleigh Sperry, Jack Antonoff, and Aaron Dessner:

Midnights

In 2022, Taylor made a surprise appearance at the VMAs, where her "All Too Well" short film took home the Moon Person for Video of the Year. During her acceptance speech, Tay told everyone that she was dropping her 10th album, Midnights, on October 21, 2022.

The Midnights era was eventful as she directed and released four music videos (full of celebrity cameos and Easter eggs, ofc), dropped three versions of the album, and collaborated with Lana Del Rey, and recruited it-girl Ice Spice for a remix of "Karma." Not! To! Mention! Tay embarked on the Eras Tour in support of the album.

Speak Now (Taylor's Version)

During her first stop in Nashville for the Eras Tour, Taylor announced that Speak Now (Taylor's Version) would be released on July 7, 2023.

"I first made Speak Now, completely self-written, between the ages of 18 and 20. The songs that came from this time in my life were marked by their brutal honesty, unfiltered diaristic confessions and wild wistfulness. I love this album because it tells a tale of growing up, flailing, flying and crashing… and living to speak about it," she wrote in her social media announcement. Taylor collaborated with Paramore's Hayley Williams and Fall Out Boy on the album's vault tracks and released a music video for "I Can See You" featuring her ex Taylor Lautner. Joey King and Presley Cash, who starred in the "Mean" music video together, also make appearances.

1989 (Taylor's Version)

At the final U.S. date of Eras Tour, Taylor almost exclusively wore blue stage outfits as an Easter egg for the massive news she was dropping that night. She revealed that 1989 (Taylor's Version) was set to be released on October 27, 2023—exactly nine years after the original version dropped.

"To be perfectly honest, this is my most FAVORITE re-record I’ve ever done because the 5 From The Vault tracks are so insane," Taylor wrote after the announcement. Speaking of the vault, Swifties' hunt for the 1989 track titles crashed Google (for good reason!). The tracks in question include Harry Styles-coded lyrics and snapshots of her mind during the initial release of her first pop album.

The Tortured Poets Department

Tay caught fans off-guard at the 2024 Grammys during her acceptance speech for Best Pop Vocal Album when she made a surprise announcement. "My brand-new album comes out April 19. It's called The Tortured Poets Department, I'm gonna go and post the cover right now backstage," she said. According to the track list that was shared on February 5, her 11th album includes features with Post Malone and Florence + the Machine.

Fans already theorized that the album could potentially be a Midnights sister album inspired by the singer's breakup with Joe Alwyn—but we'll have to wait till April 19 to see if that's true.
