Well, that took a turn! Just when we though Taylor Swift was about to announce the drop of Reputation (Taylor's version) at the 2024 Grammys, she turned the tables, and instead announced she is releasing a brand-new album.

“Okay, this is my 13th Grammy, which is my lucky number, I don't know if I had ever told you that,” she said while accepting her award for Best Pop Vocal Album, for Midnights, on stage. “I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I've been keeping from you for the last two years, which is that my brand new album comes out on April 19th. It's called The Tortured Poets Department.”

And, she released the cover art moments later, on Instagram.

It's all really a very T-Swift move (remember when she announced she was dropping Midnights while on stage at the 2022 VMAs?).

Despite the shock of this announcement, fans are still hoping for a Reputation (TV) drop soon, as it's been a long-time coming.

Since the record-breaking singer's legal feud over her master recordings with record executive Scooter Braun (explained here), she has been diligently re-recording all of her studio albums. Reputation is her sixth, and for months, she has been dropping Easter eggs that it was on its way.

At the Golden Globes, last month, Swift made an appearance in a bright green sequin Gucci gown designed by Sabato De Sarno. Stunning as the custom piece was, what Swifties quickly noticed first was how Reputation-coded it was, as green, the color of snakes, is often associated with the singer's vengeful album. To add fuel to the fire, Swift styled the dress with metallic green Christian Louboutin heels and added some shimmer with De Beers jewelry, including cascading diamond earrings and a ring that coiled around her finger—like a snake.

After the award show, the pop star has since dropped even more Reputation Easter eggs. On an outing with good friend Blake Lively, for example, she wore a scrunchy green velvet minidress (again with the green), which she paired with pointy thigh-high calf leather boots from Jimmy Choo’s latest collaboration with Jean Paul Gaultier. Decorating the boots was hand-drawn tattoo-style art that included—wait for it—snakes. And, she added on some wraparound (like snakes!) rings just to really get her point across.

Swift has now released four re-recorded albums—Fearless (Taylor's version) (2021), Red (Taylor's version) (2021), Speak Now (Taylor's version) (2023), and 1989 (Taylor's version) (2023), The only ones left are Reputation (Taylor's version) (2024) and her debut album, Taylor Swift (2006), as she already owns the master rights to her last three albums—Lover (2019), Folklore, (2020), Evermore (2020), and Midnights (2022)—and therefore does not need to re-record them.
