Taylor Swift election conspiracy? Monmouth poll finds nearly 1 in 5 Americans believe it

Nearly one in five Americans believe pop star sensation Taylor Swift is part of conspiracy to help Joe Biden win the 2024 national presidential election, according to a national survey by the Monmouth University Polling Institute.

Most of those who believe in this theory (71%) identify with or lean towards the Republican party with 83% of those likely to support Donald Trump in the fall,

Just under half of the 900 polled Americans even heard about the rumored Swift election conspiracy.

Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, said, "Even many who hadn’t heard about it before we polled them accept the idea as credible."

These thoughts by some Americans have been echoed by some New Jersey Republican congressional candidates such as Mike Crispi, an ultra right wind podcaster and social media personality, have stated on X, formerly Twitter, regarding the Super Bowl and election: “Taylor’s coming. She, nor the NFL are passing up the money. She’s endorsing Biden. It’s rigged. You’re the pawn.”

Before the Super Bowl, some right-wing figures thought the romance between Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs was staged and thought the game was rigged to help boost rating and support the Democratic party. One of those making these accusations was unsuccessful presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and One America News Network host Alison Steinberg.

The rigged Super Bowl rhetoric and the conspiracy theorists proposing Swift is aiding Biden in an election steal has had some influence among the American public as the Monmouth survey indicates.

Still, the survey did say that 82% of Americans polled do not believe an election Swift conspiracy exists.

The poll also reveals that two thirds of Americans (68%) would be supportive of the singer encouraging voter turnout. Democrats (88%) would be the most supportive of Swift's efforts, compared to 42% of Republicans and 71% of independents.

The Monmouth survey shows that 39% of American adults have a favorable impression of Swift. A slight majority of people polled (43%) had no opinion of her at all, while about 13% viewed the singer in a negative light. The other five percent did not know of Swift believe it or not.

Joel Penney, an associate professor at Montclair State University, told CBS news that he believes a Swift endorsement of Biden could influence the election outcome in some way: "That question of, does this stuff work in pop culture? It absolutely can."

The Monmouth University Poll was conducted by telephone from Feb. 8 to 12, 2024 and has a margin of error of +/- 4.1 percentage points for the full sample.
