It’s been nearly a decade since Taylor Swift graced the Met Gala steps, but could 2024 be the year she finally returns?

The last time the superstar attended the fashion mega-event was in 2016—and things were quite different for her at the time. In addition to rocking a totally different look (a bleached bob to be exact), Swift was also touting a slight chip on her shoulder, following the tabloid drama involving her forever-enemies Kanye West and Kim Kardashian (drama that still hasn’t ceased at the time of this writing, in fact).

At this point, Swift’s last Met Gala appearance is mythological in the Swiftverse, given that it was immortalized in her Reputation song “Dress,” where she talks about meeting her now-ex boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, for the first time. “Flash back when you met me, your buzzcut and my hair bleached.” For that carpet, Swift chose a silver snakeskin dress from Louis Vuitton, which she accessorized with bandage-like boots and beautified with a deep plum-colored lipstick. At the time, fans had no idea, but this look would become the norm for her Reputation era.

However, chances are that if Swift does attend the 2024 Met Gala, she will be rocking her regular blonde locks, and potentially have her new beau, Travis Kelce, by her side. But with the European leg of her Eras Tour kicking off that same week, can the singer fit it in to her impossibly-busy schedule? Here’s what we know.

Some sources say she will walk the carpet, others disagree.

In the days leading up to the 2024 Met Gala, there have been conflicting reports from various sources.

On Monday, April 29, Page Six “confirmed” that the singer would be present at the event. “With this year’s Met Gala just a week away, Page Six has exclusively learned that Taylor Swift will walk the red carpet on fashion’s biggest night,” reporter Mara Siegler wrote. The outlet claimed that Swift would be attending, but it was unclear if Kelce would accompany her. They did claim that both were invited, though.

In contrast to the Page Six report, People claimed that same day that Swift would not be attending the lavish event. As they linked out to the former publication’s article, the outlet stated: “Despite reports that she would be attending, the singer, who just dropped her Tortured Poets Department album on April 19, is sitting out fashion's biggest night.”

As for Swift, she has remained totally mum on the matter.

Her Eras Tour kicks off again that same week.

One element that might complicate things a bit is that Swift is set to continue her world-dominating Eras Tour the same week of the gala.

After having taken her spectacle—which has become the highest-grossing concert tour of all time—to the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Japan, Australia, and Singapore, the singer is starting the European leg of her tour, with four shows scheduled in France, from May 9 to 12.

Still, the “Fortnight” singer has never let international distance stop her. Let’s not forget when she was performing her series of shows in Japan and then she flew all the way across the world to see boyfriend Kelce play in Super Bowl LVIII (which his team, the Kansas City Chiefs, won in overtime).

Since Swift has previously been criticized for the frequency of her flights and her immense contribution to global jet emissions, the pop star has been taking efforts to compensate for her persistent air travel. So, don’t be surprised if she ends up hopping over to the fashion event, and then flying to Paris the next day.

We should also note that when People claimed Swift wouldn’t be in attendance, it was due to the forthcoming Eras shows. “She'll be focusing on rehearsals and tour prep ahead of her Eras Tour dates picking back up on May 9 in Paris before traveling all over Europe during the spring and summer,” the outlet reported.

But... she has a lot to celebrate.

What better arena for a victory walk than the Met Gala? It’s been a banner couple years for Swift, who seems to find a new record to break with each passing day.

In the past four months alone, the superstar has won her fourth Grammy Award for Album of the Year, making her the only musical performer to ever win the award four times. Then, she dropped her Eras Tour film on Disney+, and the movie quickly became the highest-grossing concert film of all time (casual).

Oh, and just this week, Swift’s new album, The Tortured Poets Department, reached number one on Billboard, with one of the highest debut weeks in history. The milestone marks the 14th time Swift has had a new album reach number one on the chart, and it ties her with Jay-Z as the solo artists with the most number-one albums in the history of the chart (putting them only behind The Beatles when it comes to albums from all acts).

Not to mention, this is the first Met Gala to occur since Swift started dating her Super Bowl-winning beau, Kelce, and it would also mark the first time that the pair have ever walked an official red carpet together.

If Swift doesn’t walk the carpet, it almost seems like an opportunity missed. But, only time will tell when the cameras start flashing on Monday, May 6. If there’s one thing we know to expect from Swift, it’s the unexpected.
