Where is my refund?

If you’re owed a refund, when you get the money depends largely on how you requested it.

Electronic refunds through direct deposit are generally processed within a few days. A paper check, however, can take several weeks to arrive by mail.

If more information is required or there are errors on your tax forms, the IRS will typically first send a letter through the U.S. Postal Service.

For New Jersey residents, if you file electronically, tax returns can take up to four weeks to process. Paper returns can take up to about 12 weeks and returns through certified mail can take up to 15 weeks to process.

You can check the status of both federal and state refunds via different methods. You can check your federal return on the IRS website 24 hours after you electronically file.

To check the status of your New Jersey State return, you can find it on the New Jersey Treasury site. All you need is your Social Security number and the exact amount you are receiving.
