Tax season is underway in Greater Cincinnati. Here's what NKY residents need to know

Tax season is upon us.

Depending on which side of the Ohio River your home resides, property taxes will be collected in different ways.

Here's when to pay and how to dispute your property taxes if you're a Northern Kentucky resident.

When are property taxes due in Northern Kentucky?

Unlike in Ohio, property taxes are due on the same date across all counties in Kentucky.

Tax bills were delivered to each county's sheriff on Sept. 15, 2023, and are due on April 15, 2024.

Property taxes in Kentucky are paid in full. So, Northern Kentucky's taxpayers in Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties are required to pay their property taxes in full by April 15.

How can I check my tax bill?

For Kentucky residents, your best bet for finding your tax bill is to check your mail.

All bills were distributed to county sheriffs on Sept. 15, 2023, and mailed to taxpayers around that same time. However, many counties wait until Oct. 1 or Nov. 1 to mail their tax bills, according to the Kentucky Department of Revenue.

Some counties have services on their websites that allow you to view your tax bill online, like on the Kenton County Sheriff's website.

When should I pay my property taxes in Kentucky?

The state of Kentucky follows a tax collection schedule in which taxpayers can save money the earlier they send in their property taxes.

Here is the state's complete tax collection schedule:

  • Sept. 15 to Nov. 1: 2% discount on face amount.

  • Nov. 2 to Dec. 31: Face amount of tax bill.

  • Jan. 1 to Jan. 31: Face amount plus 5% penalty.

  • Feb. 1 through end of business day April 15: Face amount plus 10% penalty, plus 10% sheriff's fee.

    • If April 15 falls on a weekend or holiday, then the final deadline falls on the next business day.

This collection schedule might change slightly depending on when bills are mailed to residents in each county. For example, the 2% discount period was extended through Nov. 30, 2023, in Northern Kentucky's Campbell County this year.

How do I pay my property tax bill in Northern Kentucky?

  • In Boone County, in-person payments can be made at the Sheriff's Office, located at 3000 Conrad Lane in Burlington. Checks should be made out to Boone County Sheriff Michael A. Helmig. E-check, debit and credit card payments can be made online.

  • In Campbell County, in-person payments can be made at either Sheriff's Office location: in Newport at 1098 Monmouth St. or in Alexandria at 8330 W. Main St. Checks should be made out to Campbell County Sheriff Mike Jansen. E-check, debit and credit card payments can be made online.

E-check, debit and credit card payments can be made online.

What happens if I miss the due date to pay my property taxes?

Once businesses close on April 15, unpaid tax bills will normally be transferred to the respective county's clerk's office and start collecting additional fees. After 15, the taxpayer will need to contact their clerk's office for more information and to pay the amount due.

Can I dispute my property taxes?

Unfortunately, the review process for the 2023 property values used to calculate your taxes concluded before the tax bills were mailed out, so final assessed values have been determined.

Any questions regarding the assessed value of your property can be directed to your county's respective Property Valuation Administrator (PVA), where you can appeal the assessed value of your property.
