The deadline to file your federal taxes is in less than two months, Tuesday, April 18.

Filing taxes can be a tedious process for some, whether you’re a first-time filer or not. Everything has to be taken into account: whether you’re a student, married, have children, have a job and other factors. They all play a role in how much you’ll pay and what you could see as a return.

While there are multiple websites you can use to file, like Turbotax, sometimes it’s easier to have someone who can answer your questions in-person. If hiring a preparer is out of your budget, here are some free resources in Wichita that can help you smooth over the process without breaking the bank.

Neighborhood resource centers

Wichita, along with its partners the AARP and United Way’s Volunteer Tax Assistance Program, are hosting free tax preparation services available at three neighborhood resource centers from February through April. Walk-ins are not accepted, so make an appointment by contacting the center of your choice.

They are:

The neighborhood resource centers are open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and closed from noon to 1 p.m.

United Way of the Plains

For those who make less than $60,000 a year, United Way of the Plains hosts free tax prep services across Wichita and other places in Sedgwick, Butler, Cowly, Geary and Marion counties.

Bring your photo identification, Social Security cards for you and your dependents and all your tax forms, like your W-2. To see the full list of what to bring and more information, visit the Way of the Plain’s website.

Set up an appointment by dialing 2-1-1. The locations of the clinics are not public until you set up your appointment, but a spokesperson for the Way of the Plains said there are 13 locations across the city, plus a mobile site.

Last year, the Way of the Plains filed about 5,500 tax returns that resulted in about $8 million in refunds, according to a release.

How to find other free-file options

The Internal Revenue Service has an online tool where you can find its free file options. To find options, click “browse all providers” and enter your specific information at the top.

IRS free file only serves those who make less than $75,000 a year. Other providers may have different income requirements.
