Taskmaster star Nick Mohammed has finally explained the decision behind his Dracula costume.

The Ted Lasso actor is part of the current five-strong lineup that are taking part in hilarious tasks to try and impress Greg Davies and Alex Horne.

In a show first, Mohammed has notably been wearing an eye-catching vampire costume and matching make-up during all of the challenges this season.

Speaking to comedian Ed Gamble on the official Taskmaster podcast, the actor explained that he wanted to dress up for the series after feeling "nervous" about being himself.

"I've never really done anything as 'me' – I've either acted in scripted stuff, or I've been Mr Swallow in stuff, and things like that. So I very, very rarely, unless it's to publicise something, really, you know, go on as 'me'. So I was a little bit nervous about that," he said.

"So I thought, 'Oh, it would be fun to sort of slightly hide behind something', even though it is just me in a Dracula outfit, that sort of instantly relaxed me, thinking, 'Oh, well, there's a costume and make-up, so I can treat it like it's fiction'."

The comedian went on to reveal that he also wanted to hide his exhaustion after welcoming his third child with wife Becka, saying: "We'd just had our third and final baby, Annie, who's beautiful and gorgeous.

"I was exhausted when I had the conversations with Andy Devonshire [series director] and Andy [Cartwright, series producer] and Alex [Horne].

"I was just like, 'What about if I just dress as Dracula?' and they were like, 'Oh, great', and I just sort of turned off the Zoom and was like, 'Right, bye!' And then, it sort of happened."

As well as Mohammed, season 17 also stars Inside No. 9's Steve Pemberton, Joanne McNally, Sophie Willan and John Robins.

So far on the series, the contestants have rocked Handmaid's Tale-inspired outfits, created a dot-to-dot picture in an open field and designed a perfect gift for grannies.

While discussing the series' unusual tasks, Mohammed acknowledged his costume's impracticality.

"I realised within the first hour of starting filming that it was really impractical. It took ages to keep getting in and out of it, it would need touching up in between every single task. And there's a lot of tasks!" he said.

"And that cape, it was so hot! I mean, I loved it, I still loved it, and I like how it looks. Do they ever mention it... does Greg ever mention it, that I'm in it?" he continued, with Gamble replying: "I mean, it is mentioned. But there's not like a big chat about it, which is even funnier."

Taskmaster airs and streams on Thursday nights at 9pm on Channel 4, where you can also stream previous series. The Taskmaster Podcast is available on iTunes.
