The BBC has renewed Taskmaster star Greg Davies' comedy series The Cleaner for a third season.

Confirming the news today (February 5), the broadcaster announced that season three of Davies' sitcom was amongst a slate of renewal announcements including new series of Guz Khan's Man Like Mobeen, a second series of Dreaming Whilst Black, and new shows featuring comic characters Alan Partridge and Philomena Cunk.

Based off of a German comedy series titled Der Tatortreiniger ('Crime Scene Cleaner'), The Cleaner sees Davies star as Paul 'Wicky' Wickstead.

A government-certified cleaning technician, Wicky is responsible for dealing with a series of gruesome crime scenes, getting to know a variety of people along the way.

The upcoming episodes will see Wicky tackle the clean-up of a lighthouse in Northern Ireland, encounter a heavily pregnant woman, and reconnect with a long-lost friend.

However, there are also problems for Wicky outside of work, as his new domestic arrangement is not sitting well for him.

Zita Sattar is also reprising her role as recurring character Ruth Edwards, a police officer who is good friends with Wicky, in The Cleaner's new series.

The show also features famous guest stars on a regular basis, with previous episodes including appearances from Helena Bonham Carter, David Mitchell and Layton Williams.

"I'm as pleased as can be to have Wicky mop up more gore during his next existential crisis," said Davies in a statement.

"The Cleaner is such a pleasure to make and I can't wait to welcome a new gang of guest characters to his bloody work place."

Vivien Muller-Rommel, executive producer of The Cleaner, added: "We are absolutely delighted to be back for a third instalment of Wicky mopping up after some larger-than-life characters.

"Thank you BBC and UK audiences for trusting us with another round of spills, thrills, and the occasional rogue body part."

Season two of The Cleaner aired back in March 2023, with the sitcom ending up in the top ten most-viewed scripted comedies in the UK.

"The Cleaner was one of the most watched comedy shows in the UK last year, and it’s no surprise as Greg Davies is British comedy royalty and he has poured all his talent into Wicky and the series of extraordinary situations he finds himself in," said Jon Petrie, the BBC's director of comedy.

"Series three promises to bring more weird and wonderful characters onto our screens."

The Cleaner airs on BBC One and iPlayer.
