Taskmaster spoilers follow.

The one and only Taskmaster Greg Davies did something rather unusual on the show's latest episode.

In one of tonight's (April 13) bizarre challenges, viewers noticed the normally stern Greg softened up when almost the entire line-up made a faux pas that would've had them disqualified.

This season's quintet — Jenny Eclair, Frankie Boyle, Ivo Graham, Mae Martin and Kiell Smith-Bynoe — were called to sit on a chair under a conveyor belt that was cascading new potatoes onto their heads.

They had to wear a top hat to collect the potatoes, making sure to steer clear from animal toys also placed on the belt. The contestants were allowed to look at the belt before collecting the spuds, attempting to memorise the potatoes and toys sequence. There was, however, one small caveat: they couldn't touch anything.

Mae and Ivo realised the sequence was also coded in front of them, with pictures of Greg and Alex Horne replicating the order. But regardless of how many spuds the contestants got, some of them seemed to have forgotten the 'no touch' rule.

In the heat of the moment, Jenny and Frankie touched a pen to note down the sequence, while Mae also grabbed the hat.

When assigning points in the studio, Alex informed the contestants they had broken the rules. A devastated Jenny, who had been by far the most cheerful at the idea of being hit by the potatoes, threw herself on the floor in despair.

Surprisingly, Greg let this collective slip slide, assigning points purely based on the number of spuds in the hat. Giving five points to Mae and four to Jenny, the Taskmaster traded his iron fist for a softer approach, with some incredulous viewers pointing out his magnanimous gesture on Twitter.
