It’s tapas time: New Middle Eastern restaurant from New York arrives in Miami

A New York-based hospitality group is bringing more Middle Eastern fare to Miami.

Opening at the Yotel Miami is Mazeh from GPG Hospitality, the group behind Manhattan restaurants Nur and Lamalo. Mazeh will serve Middle Eastern food, with an emphasis on tapas, in downtown Miami.

The idea, then, is to order small plates over the course of a leisurely dining experience.

Some of the signature dishes include Jaffa ceviche, which is a Middle Eastern version of the Peruvian classic dish. You can also order arayes (ground beef or fish grilled inside pita), falafel cigars wrapped in phyllo dough or skewers. There are also a variety of grilled dishes — octopus, steak, cabbage.

If savory dips are your passion, try the Tiffin Box, which holds an assortment of four seasonal dips and spread, like matbucha (slow-roasted tomato and pepper stew); skordalia (traditional Greek garlic, potato and almond spread); baba ghanoush (charred eggplant and tahini); and tzatziki (Greek yogurt and cucumber spread). It’s served with thick, chewy pita.

Mazeh also has a cocktail program, with such drinks as You Oughta Know (vodka, Lillet Rouge, grapefruit, dill and honey) and Doo Wop (rum, lime, passion fruit, lemongrass and lavender).

The restaurant, which is also open for breakfast, will also serve breakfast boards — Greek, English, Continental and Middle Eastern — every morning. An attached outdoor lounge called Float is scheduled to open later this year.
